Business Process Automation in Cairns: How Power Automate and Power Apps Save FNQ Businesses Hours Every Week
14 September 2026Quick answer: A telecom bill audit is a line-by-line review of what your business pays for mobiles, internet and phone services, compared with what you actually use and what is available now. For a Far North Queensland not-for-profit we worked with, moving mobile plans and NBN connections to better-matched services cut the monthly bill by around 45%, with no drop in internet speed. That comparison left out their VoIP phone system. Results vary from business to business. Tropix Tech does these reviews for organisations in Cairns, Cooktown, Thursday Island, the Atherton Tablelands, Innisfail, Townsville, Mackay and across Queensland.
Why most Far North Queensland businesses overpay for phones and internet
Telecommunications bills are one of the few business costs that nobody reviews. They arrive every month, they get paid, and they quietly drift upward. A staff member leaves and their mobile service keeps running. A plan signed three years ago stays in place even though cheaper, faster options now exist. An internet service sized for a different office stays on the books after a move.
In regional areas this is worse. Smaller teams, several sites and a long list of providers mean the person paying the invoice is rarely the person who knows what is on it. Whoever looks after IT is often a busy generalist, and the bill never makes it to the top of their list.
What is a telecom bill audit?
A telecom bill audit is a structured review of every telecommunications service your business pays for. It answers four questions:
- What are we paying for, service by service?
- Is anything unused, duplicated or sitting on an old plan?
- Is each service sized for what the business needs today?
- Could the same result be delivered for less, without hurting quality or reliability?
It is a desk exercise first. We read the invoices, map them to people and sites, and only then talk about changes.
Case study: a Far North Queensland not-for-profit cut its monthly bill by around 45%
When a community-focused not-for-profit moved its IT support to Tropix Tech, we reviewed its mobile and internet invoices as part of onboarding. We compared the most recent invoice from its previous provider with the first invoice after the move to us.
- What was compared: business mobile plans and NBN internet connections across more than one site.
- What was not included: the VoIP phone system. We left it out so the comparison is like for like.
- Internet speed: unchanged.
- Result: a monthly saving of around 45% on the services compared.
The organisation has agreed to let us share the result. We have left out invoice amounts and account details.
Why one organisation’s result is not a promise
A 45% saving does not mean every business will save 45%. This organisation had plans that had built up over time and were not well matched to how the team worked. Your starting point could be better or worse. Some businesses will find a small saving. A few will find their current arrangement is already good value, and we will tell you so. Exit fees and the end dates of existing contracts also affect what is worth changing and when.
What we check in a telecom bill audit
| Area | What we look for |
|---|---|
| Mobile services | Services with no active user, plans that do not match real usage, and accounts spread across more than one provider |
| Internet and NBN business plans | Speed tiers that are too high or too low, double-ups after a move, and connections that could be consolidated |
| Contract terms | End dates, exit fees and the best time to switch |
| Add-ons and charges | Old features, devices and fees that are no longer needed |
| Site coverage (check an address on the nbn address checker) | What is actually available at each address, which differs a lot across the Cape, the Torres Strait and the Tablelands |
Telecom reviews for Cooktown, Thursday Island and remote sites
Connection options are not the same everywhere in Far North Queensland. What works for an office in Cairns may not suit a community centre in Cooktown or a service provider on Thursday Island. Before recommending any change we check what is available at each address and what the site needs to keep running. A cheaper service that drops out is not a saving.
Because Tropix Tech works with clients across the region, including Cairns, Atherton, Mareeba, Innisfail, Cooktown, Thursday Island, Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton and Brisbane, we can review all of your sites in one go instead of treating each location separately. Most of the review is done remotely. Where we need to be on site, we arrange it.
Who benefits most from a telecom bill audit?
- Not-for-profits and community organisations, including ACNC-registered charities, with several sites and limited admin time. Registered not-for-profits also receive 20% off our standard rates. See our guide to IT support for not-for-profits in FNQ.
- NDIS providers with a large number of staff mobiles. See IT support for NDIS providers in Cairns.
- Medical and allied health practices with multiple phone lines, mobile devices and internet connections.
- Tourism, hospitality and trade businesses that have moved premises or grown without reviewing their services.
How the review works
- Send us your last few invoices. Mobiles, internet and any other telecommunications services. We keep them confidential.
- We map it. Every service is matched to a person or site, and anything unmatched is flagged.
- We show you the comparison. You see your current cost beside the proposed option, service by service, including any exit fees.
- You decide. There is no pressure to change. If you do, we handle the switch and keep disruption to a minimum.
Telecommunications is also part of your wider technology picture. If your phones, internet and security are managed by different people, small gaps appear. Our VoIP phone systems and managed IT services sit alongside the telecom review, and our Essential Eight guide for FNQ businesses explains how connectivity fits into security planning. The Australian Government’s Australian Cyber Security Centre publishes the Essential Eight framework itself.
Frequently asked questions
How much can a business save with a telecom bill audit?
It depends on how long it has been since the last review. One Far North Queensland not-for-profit saved around 45% a month on mobile and internet services, with no drop in internet speed. Other businesses will save more or less, and some will have little to save. We tell you before you commit to anything.
Does the audit include our VoIP phone system?
It can, but we treat it separately. The 45% result in this article covers mobiles and NBN only, so the comparison is like for like. If you want your phone system reviewed as well, we can do that as a second step.
Do you work with businesses in Cooktown and Thursday Island?
Yes. We support clients across Far North Queensland and beyond, including Cooktown and Thursday Island. We check what connection options exist at each address before recommending a change, because availability varies across the Cape and the Torres Strait.
Will I be locked into a new contract?
We show you the contract terms of any option before you decide, including exit fees on your current services. You choose whether to change. If you ever have an unresolved problem with a telecommunications provider, the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman offers a free complaints service for small businesses, and the ACCC’s business guidance explains your rights on pricing and contracts.
Is there a discount for not-for-profits?
Registered not-for-profits receive 20% off our standard service rates.
How long does a telecom bill audit take?
The review itself is usually quick once we have your invoices. The timing of any switch depends on your contract end dates and the services involved.
Where is Tropix Tech based?
Tropix Tech is based in Westcourt, Cairns, and supports clients across Queensland. The legal entity is Technology Hub (TNQ) Pty Ltd. We have on-site technicians distributed across Queensland, including Atherton/Tablelands, Cairns, Townsville, Brisbane, etc. We make regular visits to remote areas such as Thursday Island, Cooktown, Mossman, Ingham, Ayr, Mackay, etc.
